Lots of folks with influencer dreams seem to think the recipe for success is instant fame and luxury. They jump right in, blowing up their credit cards, some up to hundreds of thousands of dollars, on designer labels and jetting off to exotic destinations – all to project a lifestyle they can't afford. But here's the thing, that approach is about acting the part, not actually doing the work.
Social media is a land of carefully crafted illusions, not real life. Those fancy vacations and designer threads might be sponsored or strategically saved for. Constantly comparing your everyday life to someone else's highlight reel is a surefire way to end up broke and discouraged.
The good news is that there are plenty of successful influencers who started small and built their audience organically. It's a long game, not a quick win. As someone that works with influencers for big, global brands, no one has ever asked me to get them influencers that only post luxury vacations or designer bags. Even the A-listers I’ve worked with do not post like that. The most important thing is to be authentic and actually care about what you are posting! Maybe you have your niche wrong and are forcing yourself to fake it. You don’t have to.
The key? Ditch the instant-luxury facade and focus on the real work:
Create high-quality content: Even if you’re starting with just your cell phone, make sure the lighting is good and you frame the shots well.
Build partnerships: Partner with smaller brands or local businesses, that way you can both benefit from teaming up on a giveaway or post collaboration.
Be yourself: Connect with your audience in an authentic way and talk about things you care about. There is no faster way to burn out than if you’re putting on an act.
